All the prize winning and commended photos are on view as part of the 'My Sussex' exhibition at Café Baskerville in Crowborough.
1st Place
Storm Brewing Over Seven Sisters by Phil Bird
"For me this sums up Sussex. A rolling landscape ending in brilliant white chalk cliffs and an aquamarine sea just before the storm breaks. Big skies and old cottages contrast with the verdant grass downland and clean sand and shingle beaches. The best of England in one county!"
Judge's comment: "Phil has captured a classic Sussex view where land meets sea in a way that demonstrates both a lot of skill and an 'eye' for a picture."
- Gary Francis ('My Sussex' judge and Courier Chief Photographer)
Phil wins a Ricoh CX3 High End Compact Camera (value £299) supplied by RedBox Cameras.
2nd Place
Eastbourne Pier by Jack Taylor
"It's always a magical moment to see the starlings circling around Eastbourne Pier at twilight. On this particular winter's evening it came together with a great sunset and a dog walker. I remember chatting to a number of people who regularly watch the starlings come to roost. A great memory for me."
Judge's comment: ""Jack's photo is not only a beautifully balanced composition, and it also shows the importance of timing in photography as a particular set of elements come to together to create a memorable Sussex scene."
- Andrew Newson ('My Sussex' judge and Professional Photographer)
Jack wins a voucher for a photography course supplied by UK Photo Courses - to the value of £110.
3rd Place
The West Pier by Jonathan Close
"The image is a record of the destruction of a great building, I heard about the fire and went down to photograph what was left. It was a very cold and dull day with no chance of photography. But I could see a very small gap of cloud forming on the horizon and decided to wait and wait, freezing cold, and this is what mother nature rewarded me with."
Judge's comment: "Jonathan's entry captures the burnt remains of what has become an iconic structure, strikingly set against nature's fiery display. A dramatic and memorable image."
- Adam Miles ('My Sussex' judge and owner, RedBox Cameras)
Jonathan wins a selection of quality photographic papers from Online Papers:
Hahnemühle Range pack value £30.00 + vat
A Canson Range pack value £16.00 + vat
A Permajet Range Pack value £12.76 + vat
Commended Entries
Jack and Jill Windmills, near Clayton on the Downs by Chris Mole.
"A distinctive landmark that enhances the landscape. This shot was taken on a stormy winter day - the sun came out for five minutes."
Foot path to Halnaker Windmill by Debra Parry
"I have always loved the woods, the way the trees come to life in the summer and how beautiful they look during winter, just waiting to jump alive again, an ever changing process, what better way to enjoy this than on a beautiful summers evening whilst out walking with friends."
North Falmer by David Bulling
"This picture evokes a feeling of 'My Sussex' in me because, as money was tight during my childhood, my father and I would often go walking and camping in the Sussex countryside during the summer. I have tried to capture a sense of surreal beauty as seen through the eyes of a child with the bright colours and golden sunsets that I now associate with summer in Sussex."
Elderly Man at the De La Warr Pavilion by Lance Dixon
"I like this photograph for its contrasts. The interior warmth provided by this public Sussex pavilion looking out onto the cold February promenade. The frailty of an elderly man juxtaposed to similar aged architecture which still appears alive and vibrant. It could almost be a dream."
Pavilion Reflections by Maureen Martin
"I took this photo on a bright December day in 2009. The pavilion is reflected in one of the ornamental ponds in the front garden of the Royal Pavilion. This is my favourite building in Sussex. I think the exterior is as interesting as the interior.I have included the surround of the pond as I feel that this frames the picture."
Ditchling Beacon by Brian Whittaker
"After half a century living in Sussex at full working pace, retirement is giving me time to see our county in more reflective mode. In this scene, I see the gentleness of our downs paths and have time to wonder what lies beyond the brow of the hill, confident that it can only be pleasant."
Horse Eye Levels, near Pevensey by Jim Izzard
"This area really is 'My Sussex' as I've spent so many hours in the last 30 years walking, cycling and driving down this single track road between Herstmonceux and Pevensey.
It's as beautiful in winter as it is in the summer sunshine. It's my vision of Home."
Untitled by Terry Busby
"The photo showing the seafront in a totally different viewpoint than usual, with people still having fun."
Castle Hill Nature Reserve by Michael Shuttleworth
"I took this image whilst walking across to Castle Hill Nature Reserve. These ponies had been imported from Exmoor for the winter to help manage the Downs. On occasion some of them allowed me to stroke them and I took a series of images of them in the snow of February 2010. The snow was dense for days and the wild ponies faced the elements gracefully."
West Wittering Beach on a Stormy February Evening by David Baker
"What does WW mean to me? My photographic passions are sand, sea, stone and the odd cow. Whilst West Wittering and East Head lack the latter, they provide an essential and important aspect for my passion for the former. It's about the contrast - from the wide open space of the beach to the soft texture of the dunes. I have a considerable amount of affection for West Wittering as it's where I discovered that I was a committed coast hugger."
Worthing Pier by Roy Powell
"The seaside in spring with a harsh setting sun with a man digging for bait to go fishing."
Arundel Castle by Emmanuel Parazo
"This was taken in Arundel , famous castle here in west sussex and it was taken in the afternoon after a heavy rain. I love going here if ever I got a chance, and after going here for 5yrs...finally I found the perfect angle to show how I love this place."
